Carrot sorts and taste

How does a good carrot taste? There is probably as many opinions in this matter as there is carrot eaters. It does not make it any less complicated that the taste not only depends on the sort, but also on what time of the year the carrot is eaten, and last but not least on the fertility of the soil, where the carrot is grown. Besides that some sorts are better cooked, while others raw.

We choose different sorts depending on what time of the year it is sold and eaten. All the time we try out alternative sorts, to always have the best tasting once as our main sorts. We can of course have weeks were the taste of the carrot is different, because the alternative sorts is in our production. We always put the name of the sort on the back of the carrot bag, so you can create your own opinion on which sort is your favorite.

The other important factor, when we deal with carrots, is the soil in which the carrot has grown. In this case it's definitely positive that the soil is organically cultivated, because it means that the soil has very high content s of microorganisms able to release lots of secondary substances, which appears to have a saying, for instance, in the taste. Another important factor is the weather. The sunnier it is in the summer, the sweeter the carrots taste.

Caretaking and watering etc. also has a saying, so the more experience, the better it gets. Still it happens that the same sort, grown in the same place, with the same treatment, tastes different than the year before. That is the fascinating thing about carrots, and the thing that makes it exciting to work with.

We have tried to describe taste and consistency of the sorts we grow, and also what time of the years they are sold. There can of course be some differences the individual year.

Summer/fall:

Nikki. Grows early, and has a fresh though still profound taste of carrot. Taste and consistency stays good throughout most of the fall.

Nelson. Very crispy and juicy sort that nearly explodes in the mouth and the sweet, fresh juice is spread out to all the taste buds. Especially this sort can, after a very dry period, develop single roots that can have a weak taste of soap. It vanishes again after a rainy period, and does not have anything to do with cleanser from the packing station.

Fall/winter:

Maestro. A very aromatically and sweet taste. Tried out through lots of seasons. Keeps the taste till the end of January, depending on the weather.

Nevis. Tried out through lots of seasons. Good color and firm, with a pleasant nutty taste of carrot. Keeps the taste till spring.

Miami. Relatively new sort that is only made organic. Pretty firm, but with a fresh taste of carrot. In some types of soil, you can already use these in the fall, and different from others, it can keep the taste till winter.

Starship. New sort that is only made organic. Similar to Miami in taste and use.

Nipomo. Really tasty sort. Good color and firm. Tastes good till the end of the winter.

Nelix. Fine, delicious carrots with a good taste. Keeps the taste till January/February.

Winter/spring:

Nagadir. Very suitable for staying in the soil under straw. A nice, fresh and sweet taste of carrot after Christmas and until Spring.

Nepal. New sort to us that we are looking forward to be tasting throughout the winter.

Nairobi. Like Nikki, it has a good, fresh taste of carrot. It sprouts late, and therefore keeps its taste very well under the straws till late spring

Nerim. It is very firm, and therefore it's good till late spring, where it starts to ripen. That is why the taste is really good and carroty this time of the year.
